Derrow Dermatology has been in business for 12 years. A small dermatology practice, Derrow Dermatology operates with all-women staff and one MD and has plans to expand soon.
IT has and will continue to play a critical role in their growth. As a member of the modern medical industry, Derrow Dermatology relies on IT for communicating with patients, maintaining health records, and more.
“Our call volume is very high, so we rely on email and the patient portal a lot,” says Jennifer Ruiz, Practice Administrator, Derrow Dermatology. “Our computers need to work and they need to work fast.”
That’s why the Derrow Dermatology staff trusts SemTech IT to take care of their IT.
Like many small businesses, Derrow Dermatology’s first instance of IT support was rather informal. They had a friend of a friend handling their IT, to varying degrees of success.
“He kind of put band-aids on situations,” says Jennifer.
The “one-man IT support” arrangement is common for small businesses. It’s inexpensive and may be able to handle their needs to some extent. However, with an entire IT environment being managed by one person, it’s not long before a critical error occurs.
For Derrow Dermatology, the problems really started when this IT guy helped them move to a new location. He didn’t set up their new environment properly, which led to server crashes and critical security vulnerabilities.
“Someone had managed to sign in through the backend and got our banking information,” says Jennifer. “The server crashed, we couldn’t recover the patient records, and he could not tell us why it happened. That was when I knew we had to find someone else.”
Recognizing their need for a more formal type of IT support, Derrow Dermatology hired an IT company to start managing their systems. Unfortunately, this company was both expensive and ineffective.
Due to that original data breach, the Derrow Dermatology staff were concerned about server security and backups, but this new IT company failed to do anything about it.
“They were terrible,” says Jennifer. “They never backed up the server, and we were paying all this money.”
Resorting to find a new IT company yet again, the Derrow Dermatology staff reached out to their business contacts to get a recommendation. Their alarm vendor put them in touch with SemTech IT, and the rest is history.
“We love how personable they are,” says Jennifer. “It’s been a blessing ever since. Everyone we’ve dealt with from SemTech has been so nice.”
The SemTech IT team made an immediate difference for Derrow Dermatology. They began by getting to know the staff at Derrow Dermatology, understanding how they work, and what their priorities were. With that critical information, they got to work improving Derrow Dermatology’s systems, ensuring they were reliable, secure, and backed up.
“They’re always on the back end making sure things are running OK,” says Jennifer. “Any issue we have, they’re great to respond.”
IT resources have never been as important as they are now during the COVID-19 pandemic. In order for organizations to stay connected and productive while working remotely, they need the right technologies and processes in place.
“A couple of our girls are working from home, and it’s great that they can support that,” says Jennifer. “To have someone that was available for that was great.”
Unfortunately, due to how quickly the pandemic developed, many organizations were unable to prepare for the shift to a remote work setting. Doing so would have required careful planning, methodical execution of new processes, and expert implementation of new technologies. Fortunately for Derrow Dermatology, they can rely on Derrow Dermatology for expert assistance.
“That’s why it’s so important to have up-to-date technology, but also to have reliable service,” says Jennifer. “That’s what we’ve had with SemTech.”
With SemTech IT as their partner, Derrow Dermatology can trust that their IT won’t fail them. When the occasional small issue comes up, all they have to do is place a call and talk to their familiar contact at SemTech IT to get it fixed.
“They’re personable and professional, but it’s like a family,” says Jennifer. “We always deal with the same people, and I love that.”
