Like many small businesses, Derrow Dermatology’s first instance of IT support was rather informal. They had a friend of a friend handling their IT, to varying degrees of success.
“He kind of put band-aids on situations,” says Jennifer.
The “one-man IT support” arrangement is common for small businesses. It’s inexpensive and may be able to handle their needs to some extent. However, with an entire IT environment being managed by one person, it’s not long before a critical error occurs.
For Derrow Dermatology, the problems really started when this IT guy helped them move to a new location. He didn’t set up their new environment properly, which led to server crashes and critical security vulnerabilities.
“Someone had managed to sign in through the backend and got our banking information,” says Jennifer. “The server crashed, we couldn’t recover the patient records, and he could not tell us why it happened. That was when I knew we had to find someone else.”
Recognizing their need for a more formal type of IT support, Derrow Dermatology hired an IT company to start managing their systems. Unfortunately, this company was both expensive and ineffective.
Due to that original data breach, the Derrow Dermatology staff were concerned about server security and backups, but this new IT company failed to do anything about it.
“They were terrible,” says Jennifer. “They never backed up the server, and we were paying all this money.”
